Here you walk through the nature reserve "Vallei van de Zuidleie", located along the Ghent - Bruges canal. The name of the area recalls a medieval river, the Zuidleie, the upper reaches of the Reie(n) in Bruges. Between 1270 and 1280 the ridge (a high sand ridge) between Beernem and Sint-Joris was dug through, creating a connection between the above-mentioned Zuidleie and the Hoge Kale. The Hoge Kale formed the upper reaches of the Durme.

There are two hiking areas in this area: the Warandeputten and the Leiemeersen. The immediate surroundings of this arm have a rich and rare flora and fauna. On Gevaerts-noord there were three public drinking establishments, namely "In den nieuwen overzet", the inn "Sint-Hubert" and the inn "In den ouden zwingelaere".
