The Basilius Chapel and the Ivo Chapel became the substructure of the Gothic upper chapel, the Chapel of the Holy Blood, which houses the relic of the Holy Blood, which is carried around in the Holy Blood Procession every year on Ascension Day. The Chapel of the Holy Blood was also originally Romanesque, but was renovated in the Gothic style in the 15th century. During the French Revolution, the upper chapel was largely destroyed and rebuilt in 1819-1839. It is now a showpiece of neo-Gothic decoration. Both chapels were elevated to the status of basilica in 1923 and contain many artifacts and a museum.

      Basilica of the Holy Blood

The Basilica of the Holy Blood consists of a lower chapel and an upper chapel.
The lower chapel, dedicated to Saint Basil, is a rare example of Romanesque architecture in the coastal region.
The soberly decorated prayer room is covered by stone ridge vaults resting on heavy pillars.
Above the entrance to the side aisle you will notice a remarkable half-relief depicting the Baptism of Christ (Tournai studio 12th century).
You reach the upper chapel via the Ter Steeghere staircase, with its reconstructed bluestone facade in a transition style from late Gothic to early Renaissance.
The relic of the Holy Blood, which is said to have been brought to Bruges by the Crusaders, is kept here in the Chapel of the Holy Blood.
The chapel was renovated in the Gothic style in the 15th century, but is especially important for its 19th century neo-Gothic decoration.
The church was elevated to a basilica in 1923, because of the special veneration of the Holy Blood.

The museum in the basilica illustrates the rich history of the Holy Blood Chapel and of the Holy Blood itself in various ways. The main eye-catcher is the reliquary of the Holy Blood, which was made in 1617 by the Bruges goldsmith Jan Crabbe from approximately 30 kg of gold and silver, enriched with more than 100 gemstones.
