For centuries this street along the canal has been called Zoutdijk. In 1390 it was mentioned that salt steeghere bi den Eechoutte. So it was probably there that a jetty was located where the ships that delivered salt were unloaded. The Rozenhoedkaai was not used as a name until the 18th century. The reason was that there were stalls set up that sold rosaries. It is not known why in some cases quay or dike was chosen over the more commonly used word rei. The Rozenhoedkaai runs from the Dijver to the Braambergstraat. The Rozenhoedkaai is also the most photographed point in Bruges.

In the city the craftsmen united in guilds. These 'associations' defended the interests of their members. Almost every specialized craft, such as bakers, butchers and weavers, had its own guild. The guild members looked after each other and often settled in the same neighborhood or street.

Fun fact: Many Bruges streets are still named after their craft today: Smedenstraat, Huidevettersplein, Cordoeanierstraat, Rozenhoedkaai…
