The original tower, also called Tour Gaillarde, was part of a Gallo-Roman fortification and was often restored, expanded and elevated over the centuries. A city gate was built based on this tower in 1483, which also housed a prison.
There is a small market on the square in front of the tower, at least on Saturdays, where you can buy regional food. A sight that stands out from the many buildings in the city that are worth seeing.

It was in the 15th century that the Count of Auxerre granted the town the right to own a clock and a belfry.

The tower was built on the square base of an old gate of the Gallo-Roman city, a vestige of the foundations of the castrum.
The belfry and the clock symbolized communal freedoms.

The clock was installed in 1483. Previously this tower served as a prison.

Hebrew inscriptions would still be visible on some walls, which would indicate the existence of a Jewish community in the Middle Ages.
