In 1913, France's first steel bridge was completed here in Auxerre. The bridge consisted of two 55m arches and was 3m wide. The bridge was rebuilt at the end of 1990. In 2009 it was named the Thomas-Jefferson Liberty Bridge. A plaque on the Left Bank honors the third President of the United States (1801-1809). A "symbol of Franco-American friendship," as she puts it. He crossed the department as ambassador and moved to Auxerre in 1787.
