The history of the old exhibition center in Leipzig began with the International Construction Exhibition in May 1913. The exhibition was opened in the presence of the King of Saxony. By 1928, 17 halls with a total of 130,000 square meters of exhibition space were built, and by 1988 a further eight. The Leipzig Trade Fair became the most important trade fair in the world at the beginning of the 20th century and was given the title "World Fair". In 1996 the trade fair moved to the new exhibition center on the outskirts of Leipzig.
