The monument depicts the blacksmith with his hammer raised, powerful and determined, as a symbol of the courage, resilience, and desire for freedom of the citizens of Aachen.

The figure evokes an Aachen legend: In the 13th century, a blacksmith is said to have made a pact with the devil during the construction of the town hall. When the devil wanted to demand the reward for his help—the soul of the first person to enter the finished building—the blacksmith outwitted him by letting a cat run into the town hall. Enraged, the devil attempted to throw a giant stone at Aachen, but missed the city. According to legend, this stone now lies in Kornelimünster ("Devil's Stone").
