The Schanzenturm is the former largest water tower in Europe, located on a hill (28 m above sea level) in Hamburg's Sternschanzenpark. It is an industrial building, built between 1907 and 1910 by the architect Wilhelm Schwarz, who was employed by the Hamburg waterworks, and was used in its original function until 1961. The base of the tower is a high reservoir for the former city water supply, which had existed since 1863 and was taken out of service in 1905. Today it houses the Mövenpick Hotel.

Sternschanze is a district of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg in the Altona district.

Sternschanze is located between the districts of St. Pauli, Altona-Altstadt, Eimsbüttel and Rotherbaum.

The boundaries essentially include the area known as the Schanzenviertel, although the district is not completely identical to it.

The southern part of Eimsbüttel belongs to the Schanzenviertel, but not to the Sternschanze district.

The Sternschanze is characterized by a largely closed old building.

At around half a square kilometer, it is the smallest district of Hamburg in terms of area and, with over 13,000 inhabitants per square kilometer, it has a considerable population density.
