During the First World War, when the IJzer plain was flooded, the railway embankment was the border of the flooded area. The Belgian army withdrew behind the railway line and built shelters there. Most of them were made of brick and were largely dug into the railway embankment. During the war, some were replaced by concrete bunkers. During the Second World War, the Germans built a number of machine gun posts along the railway bed.

A concrete construction, located in the old railway embankment of Frontzate, is a silent witness of the Great War. Bunker is not accessible. You only have a view here through the open grille.

Small remnant of a bunker complex.
Beautiful railway cycle path, beautiful landscape, lots of history.
