Straight gravel road that connects an old railway line Nieuwpoort and Diksmuide. Important place during WWI. Fine gravel, so certainly possible with the regular bike and even a racing bike is not impossible.

The Frontzate in Nieuwpoort, also known as railway line 74, played an important role during the First World War. This former railway line between Diksmuide and Nieuwpoort-Bad became a strategic line of defense against the German army. During the Battle of the Yser in October 1914, the railway bed was used as a water barrier to limit the flooding of the Yser plain to the area between the Yser and the railway. This stopped the German advance and the area between the Yser and the railway bed became a swampy no man's land. The railway bed itself was reinforced with shelters and trenches, and served as the first line of the Belgian army.

Frontzate is a walking and cycling path of almost 15 km between Nieuwpoort and Diksmuide.

During the Great War, this old railway line 74 between Diksmuide and Nieuwpoort was a strategically important front line. Because the bed is on average more than one meter higher than the surrounding polder land, the berm serves as a defense line and also as a flood defence. Buildings in brick or concrete are located both to the left and right of the old railway bed. Along the Frontzate there are about 163 various building structures that are linked to the period 1914 - 1918.

Keep your eyes open and follow the war past.

On this route you will also come across some well-preserved bunker complexes.

A moment to step off and dive back into the past.
