Booitshoeke is a small polder village that was already mentioned as a parish in 1190 and is part of Veurne. Over the centuries it was plagued by plunderings, such as that by the Spanish army in 1659. A striking sight is the Sint-Audomaruskerk, a late Gothic hall church. The surrounding landscape is characterized by polder waterways such as the Koolhofvaart and the Proostdijkvaart, which contribute to the charming, rural atmosphere. There was a chapel here as early as 1135. In 1690 the house of worship was given two aisles and the dilapidated tower was rebuilt. Due to its proximity to the front, it suffered greatly during the First World War. Now this idyllic church is a landmark in the vast polder landscape. Booishoeke is one of the small, rare charming villages in the Westhoek.
