Seyssel Barracks Germersheim

Today, the Department of Applied Linguistics and Cultural Studies at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz is located in what was once the largest garrison in the fortress city.

The Seyssel barracks, named after General Count Seyssel d'Aix (1776-1855), was the largest military barracks in the fortress and still offers the viewer an impressive sight with its 284 m long front. The wings of the building are bent at an angle of 45 degrees. The foundation stone for the Germersheim fortress was laid about 100 m from the middle of the building in 1834. Raised 100 years later, it finally found its home in front of the Ludwigstor.
