One of the oldest historic buildings on the Grote Markt in Dendermonde. Originally, the building was successively a meat and cloth hall, an aldermen's house, a quartermaster and a prison. Today the Vleeshuis Museum is located there.

🏛️ The Vleeshuis in Dendermonde, located on the Grote Markt, is a beautiful Gothic building with a rich history and a multifaceted function throughout the centuries. Built between 1460 and 1462, on the site of an older structure from 1293, it was originally the hall where local butchers were allowed to sell their meats. Over time, the Vleeshuis served as: a meat and cloth hall; a town hall and courthouse; a prison; a guild chamber; a theater; a guardroom; a covered vegetable market (from 1862); a music school (until 1914); and an archaeological museum (since 1899).

The city museum in Dendermonde offers a lot for the eye in terms of its architecture alone.
The museum is unfortunately closed for renovation work, which will only really begin in 2025. However, there is a way to view the exhibits online:
