The street is part of the core area of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Historic Old Towns of Stralsund and Wismar. Schillstraße was named in 1869 after Ferdinand von Schill, who was killed in Fährstraße on May 31, 1809. Until it was renamed, the street was divided into three sections.

The unique island location between the Strelasund and the ponds dammed in the 13th century highlights the medieval town center, which is reflected in the extraordinary silhouette.
In the 14th century, Stralsund was, alongside Lübeck, the most important city in the entire Baltic region and was chosen as the location for peace negotiations with Denmark in 1370. The most beautiful brick town hall in the north with its far-reaching architectural significance and the elaborately designed merchant houses bear witness to the city's heyday.
The extensively preserved historical building fabric, the houses, streets, squares and courtyards, have been lovingly and meticulously renovated. The history of the Hanseatic League will be omnipresent on a tour of the old town.
The three Gothic brick churches - St. Mary's, St. Nicholas' and St. James's - impressively embody the masterful sacred architecture of the 13th and 14th centuries.
As "skyscrapers" of history, they still impress every visitor today with their colossal size
      and precious furnishings.

In 2002, Stralsund's old town was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
What makes Stralsund eligible for this prestigious title and what it means for the Hanseatic city can be seen since 2011 in the World Heritage exhibition
      at Ossenreyerstrasse 1.
