Germany's largest cable-stayed bridge connects Germany's largest island to the mainland. Like an oversized tuning fork, the pylon of the new Rügen Bridge rises over the Strelasund. At a height of 127.75 meters, this monumental structure has long since become a new landmark of Stralsund. The delicate-looking pylon is divided into two columns and three crossbeams. Eight harp-shaped steel cables support the bridge.

With a total length of 4,097 meters, the bridge, with its three lanes, is reserved exclusively for vehicular traffic. The middle lane is allocated to traffic to or from the island, depending on the traffic situation. Detectors measure the traffic flow and regulate the opening of the middle lane using traffic lights. The high bridge has a clearance of 42 meters, meeting international standards for shipping. The new Rügen Bridge relieves the Rügen Causeway, which, with its connection to Federal Highway 96, the single-track railway line, the combined pedestrian and cycle path, and the opening times for shipping traffic, had become a time-consuming bottleneck. Rail traffic, pedestrians, and cyclists continue to use the Rügen Causeway.

    Information:
    Construction cost: approximately €125 million
Construction period: August 2004 to October 2007
    Total length: 4,097 m
    Bridge structure: 2,831 m length
    Altefähr Causeway: 455 m
    Cable-stayed bridge over the Ziegelgraben: 600 m
    Pylon: 128 m
    Clearance height: 42 m

The Rügen Bridge is toll-free: You can reach the island of Rügen and return without stopping or incurring extra costs.

With its length of 4100 m, the imposing cable-stayed bridge spans the Strelasund. The old Rügendamm is still good to drive on.
