Germany's largest cable-stayed bridge connects Germany's largest island to the mainland. The pylon of the new Rügen Bridge rises like an oversized tuning fork over the Strelasund. With a height of 127.75 meters, this century-old structure has long since become a new landmark of Stralsund.
The delicate-looking pylon is divided into two columns and three crossbeams.
Eight steel cables arranged in a harp-like pattern support the bridge. With a total length of 4,097 meters, the bridge, with its three lanes, is reserved exclusively for vehicular traffic. The middle lane is allocated to traffic to or from the island depending on the traffic situation. Detectors measure traffic flow and regulate the opening of the middle lane using light signals.
The elevated bridge has a clearance of 42 meters, an international standard for navigation.
The new Rügen Bridge relieves pressure on the Rügen Dam, which had become a time-consuming bottleneck due to the addition of Federal Highway 96, the single-track railway line, the combined pedestrian and cycle path, and the opening hours for shipping.Railroad traffic, pedestrians, and cyclists continue to use the Rügen Dam.Information:

With its length of 4100 m, the imposing cable-stayed bridge spans the Strelasund. The old Rügendamm is still good to drive on.
