The Napoleon Canal is also called “De Damse Vaart”. The canal was dug by order of Napoleon by Spanish prisoners of war between 1812 and 1814. Napoleon wanted to make a connection between Bruges and Breskens to the Western Scheldt. Due to Napoleon's defeat, the canal was only dug as far as the city of Sluis. The opening of the canal took place in 1858, from that time there was shipping in Sluis until the siphons were blown up by French troops in 1940 and shipping was no longer possible.

Now the Damse Vaart is only used recreationally, for fishing, swimming competitions and pedal boating.

The Parmabrugje owes its name to Alexander Farnese – The Duke of Parma, who, at the time of the 80-year war, between Spain and the Northern Netherlands, besieged the city of Sluis and also took it ... to recapture it later have to give up. The bridge connects both banks of the Damse Vaart at the height of the "Stenen Beer". About this place lay the line between the two armies.
