The Styrum water tower was built in 1892/93 by August Thyssen to supply his iron rolling mill.
The tower supplied water to Styrum, and soon also to Bottrop.
In 1912, the building became the property of the newly founded RWW Rheinisch-Westfälische Wasserwerksgesellschaft mbH.
Until it was shut down in 1982, the tower mainly supplied process water, initially to Thyssen, later to Mannesmann.
Since 1999, the Aquarius has been an anchor point on the Industrial Heritage Route.

"The city garden culture is boundlessly and harmoniously connected with the open landscape of the Styrum (left) Ruhr river; the Broicher Damm and the adjoining Styrum bridge carry us, after a short acoustic thunderstorm along the B223 mountain road, across to the quiet Styrum (right) Ruhr river; further to the imposing TOWER of the AQUARIUS WATER MUSEUM, in the sight of which we enjoy our sixth and last break in the lonely but unfortunately rubbish-filled Styrum castle park, in the light of the late afternoon sun."
