The ship's bridge was a wooden jetty with railings on both sides, resting on five boats. The ends of the footbridge attached to both banks of the Mulde were anchored so that they could move so that the changing water levels of the Mulde were compensated. The bridge had a load capacity of 2.5 tons and was approved for pedestrians and handcarts. Bridge users had to pay a bridge fee of three pfennigs! This created a convenient connection between Döbeln and Sörmitz, especially since visitors to the Döbeln hospital, which was built not far from the bridge in 1881, could also use it.

Anyone who builds by the river must make friends with it or live with the whims of nature. The Döbelner know that only too well from the recent past. Ferry owner Rößler was also often forced to retract and salvage his bridge when the Mulde was flooded and icy. This did not always work. Damage was caused by the flood in May 1899 and again in 1907. Finally, at the end of February 1922, the heavy ice completely destroyed his life's work.
