Scherpenheuvel has been an important place of pilgrimage for Catholic believers since the 16th century and is still the most visited place of pilgrimage in Belgium. In the basilica is a small wooden statue of the Virgin Mary, which is said to be miraculous.

the winter months are the deadest there, from spring the stalls and the pilgrimage start again with numerous terraces where you can eat well,
and in the high summer somewhere in July there is the best funfair in the country, lots of atmosphere and side activities worth it
