Incidentally, the Prosper-Haniel mine in the immediate vicinity of the heap was the last active hard coal mine in the Ruhr area. It was finally closed at an official ceremony on December 21, 2018, effectively burying hard coal mining in Germany.

The Prosper-Haniel mine in Bottrop was - after the closure of the Auguste Victoria mine on December 18, 2015 - the last active hard coal mine in the Ruhr area. The mine was closed in an official ceremony on December 21, 2018 after the last coal was mined there on September 14 in regular operation. Hard coal production in Germany was thus discontinued. Backfilling of the mine began on October 7, 2021.
