It is a pleasure to spend time here on the canal.

History: The Nieuwpoort-Veurne canal is one of the waterways, paid for by Bruges, Veurne and Dunkirk, to connect Plassendale and Bruges by water with Dunkirk (in Northern France). This part was constructed around 1640. From Nieuwpoort to Wulpen, an old watercourse, the Langelis (Langgeleed), was deepened and straightened. The stretch to Veurne was then dug completely new with manpower.

The Nieuwpoort-Duinkerke Canal or Veurnevaart is a canal that connects the Belgian coastal city of Nieuwpoort and the French port city of Dunkirk. The Nieuwpoort-Duinkerke Canal is an extension of the Plassendale-Nieuwpoort Canal, and runs almost parallel to the coastline, about two to four kilometers from the sea.

The Nieuwpoort-Veurne Canal near Wulpen is a historic waterway that was constructed around 1640 to connect Bruges, Veurne and Dunkirk via Plassendale. This canal was partly deepened from an existing watercourse, the Langelis, and the rest was dug entirely by manpower. In the area you will find relics from the past, such as the Conterdijk, an earthen wall that was constructed using the earth released from the canals, and defenses from the Franco-Spanish Wars, including small forts or “redoubts”. The Wulpen bridge was for a long time the only place where the canal was crossed by a country road, which led to the development of a dike settlement with houses, inns and a brewery. Today the canal is a popular location for cyclists and fishermen, with a towpath that forms part of the F39 cycle highway.
