The tiny town of Nattwerder seems to have fallen out of time. He exudes calm and perseverance. The old photos posted throughout the village are also beautiful, showing that it looked the same here about 100 years ago. As we looked around, a resident drew our attention to it. As a transit traveller, you also feel welcome thanks to the several rest stops.
Nattwerder has an interesting history. In the 17th century, Elector Friedrich Wilhelm settled 14 experienced Swiss colonists in Nattwerder in order to improve the area.
The settlement was contractually regulated in September 1685; the "contract" consisting of 21 articles regulates all social, economic, cultural and inheritance matters of the settlers in a very unusual way. In the preliminary negotiations to the treaty, the city of Bern had insisted that the "families will move on as a free people, when they should not find the hoped-for fortune, should be allowed to return home at any time and they should not be submissive to serfdom be söllind". Serfdom was only abolished in Prussia in 1807! Other special features of the contract are the building of their own Reformed Church and the granting of their own preacher.
