The 200-year-old oak tree on the market square is a natural monument
May 30, 2023
A first oak tree was planted after the Franco-Prussian War on March 12, 1871, as a "reminder of the great events" and "on the occasion of the glorious peace", as stated in an administrative report published in the Werder Chronicle. However, it dried up. Immediately afterwards a new oak was planted - the current tree.
However, the Peace Oak needs help. Since the dry years of 2003 and 2006, the condition of the tree has visibly deteriorated. In recent years, branches have repeatedly died off in the crown. The vitality of the oak is declining, which can also be seen from the lightening foliage.
