The first oak tree was planted after the Franco-Prussian War on March 12, 1871, as a "commemoration of the great events" and "on the occasion of the glorious peace," as stated in an administrative report published in the Werder Chronicle. However, it withered and died. Immediately afterward, a new oak was planted—the current tree.

The Peace Oak, however, needs help. Since the droughts of 2003 and 2006, the tree's condition has visibly deteriorated. In recent years, branches in the crown have repeatedly died. The oak's vitality is waning, which is also evident in its thinning foliage.
