German-French Castle Trail

Very good signage, you can hardly get lost.

- Section between the Peace Cross and the Blumenstein Castle Ruins - Along this mountainous premium trail, in the German-French UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Palatinate Forest/Northern Vosges, eight castle ruins are lined up like a string of pearls. These include the Wegelnburg ruins, as well as the Löwenstein and Blumenstein ruins. There is a lot to see here, not just in terms of scenery, but also history: for example, the legend of the "one-eyed Hagen" or the "dragon slayer Siegfried".
The 33-kilometer route, which is recommended for two day stages, starts in Schönau, not far from the German-French border. Halfway there is also a shortcut via a local hiking trail. For example, the 15-kilometer-long eastern loop, which leads from Schönau over the Wegelnburg ridge to Fleckenstein, down to the Etang de Fleckenstein and through the Sauer valley back to Schönau. Or the 16-kilometer-long western loop, which leads from Obersteinbach anti-clockwise over the Wasigenstein to the Zigeunerfels to Wengelsbach, to the Blumenstein castle ruins and over the Friedenskreuz and the Windstein back to Obersteinbach.

I don't understand why this part of the trail should be a highlight... there are many nicer sections on this trail
