Hiking

The first mention of the castle dates back to 1173. The first stone fortification was probably designed by Ugolino de Montemarte, who died in 1394 before it was completed. Emperor Frederick II lived here as a boy. The current complex, with the corresponding changes, was designed and built by Cardinal Albornoz in preparation for the return of the popes from exile in Avignon. However, more than a century would pass before the castle was fully expanded. The fortress was not completed until 1538, when castles had almost lost their importance as military bases.
