The small chapel "Portiunkula" (Porziuncola), one of the most important and original sanctuaries of the Franciscan religious communities, stands in the middle of the nave of the large baroque cathedral "Santa Maria degli Angeli".

The Portiuncula Chapel, located in the valley of Assisi, has a very special meaning for Francis. Here, after a long search and struggle, he heard Jesus' mission in concrete terms. Just like the little church of San Damiano, Francis also rebuilt this chapel with his own hands. In this way, the Portiuncula symbolically becomes a place from which the new life for Francis and his brotherhood grows.

The Transitus Chapel is also in the immediate vicinity. According to legend, this is where Francis lay naked on the bare ground in his dying hour. Even as he was dying, Francis held on to his “Mistress Poverty”.

In the 16th century, the small portiuncula and the Transitus Chapel were integrated into the new building of the mighty papal basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli.

"During the Holy Mass on February 24, 1209, Francis understands the gospel as "Good News" for himself in the portiuncula. In this same church the Evangelium, as the Lord sent his disciples to preach, was read and was the Holy One of God As soon as he had finished the Mass he asked the priest to interpret the Gospel for him. When St. Francis heard (...) he immediately rejoiced in the Spirit of God and said: "This is what I want, that's what I'm looking for, that's what I want to do from the bottom of my heart." (cf. 1 Cel 21/22)"
