The gate is carved with Christian and pagan symbols for the protection of the courtyard.
Master Barsan is the most famous woodcarver from the village of Barsan in Maramures.
On the occasion of the Austrian EU Presidency in 2005, Romania donated the wooden gate, which was carved in the traditional style of the Maramures area.
