We started around 7am in warm, calm weather with a few dramatic clouds hanging on the peaks. The climb was steady and scenic, passing a lot of cows and quiet trails. We took a break at Graf Meran Haus for a beef soup and coffee on the terrace, great view, great atmosphere. The descent via the Goassteig was steep and a bit technical, but manageable. All in all, a rewarding loop with 15.6 km and around 1,060 m of elevation gain. A few hikers on the way, but mostly peaceful.

Setting off from the Hladilnika tram 10 terminus at the tree lined fringe of South Park, Sofias biggest central green space, I headed straight up café buzzing Vitosha Boulevard, the citys pedestrian heart. A brief glide past garden lawns and the domes of Alexander Nevsky Cathedral added postcard flash to the trek, before the route slipped under Independence Square to finish amid the glass roofed Roman lanes of the Serdica Archaeological Complex. The whole 11km unfolded under a sweltering early July heatwave that had most of Europe sweating. Shade was scarce once I left the park, but the landmark-packed streets more than repaid the effort.

I began in deep, riverside shade at the Simeonovo bus stop (line 67), chatted with a friendly local woman about Bulgaria and the wider world, then pushed straight up sunbaked ski slopes, breaking tree line above 2000m. A short plateau led to the final 200m grind onto Mal Rezens summit ridge, its skyline dotted with silent, rusting lift towers. Lunch waited at the Cherni Vrah meteorological station, perched on the high moor. The descent slipped through muddy, knee battering switchbacks to Aleko Hut, veered past another abandoned cablecar station, and wound down through quiet forest to the Razklona za Lift Dragalevtsi bus stop (line 66). In short: a superb hike, endless views and near total solitude on the steep ascent.

The bridge in picture #22 doesn't look very trustworthy...
