Lembeke originated on the inland dunes that formed about 10,000 years ago, when the mainland was still connected to England.
Silex finds from the Mesolithic prove that hunter-nomads set up camp on the south side of the dune ridge. The entire Lembeke territory was a sandy, heathland region, crossed by a ridge, on which centuries later the Antwerp highway from Oosteeklo to Eeklo sought its way. We still find the road under that name in the Lembeke forests. Very old lare names (lare = open space in the forest) such as Cattelare, Gokelare, Hokelare... point to the original afforestation and heathland. Toponyms with 'heide', 'veld', 'woestine'... also refer to the barren nature of the region.
