A Celtic cross from the 16th century surrounded by small boulders and a dolmen are the triggers of this memorial site. A Breton and an Algerian (Zouarine) division camped here. The Bretons were a bit older and this was a quiet place in support of the front. Until the Germans launched their first gas attack here on April 22, 1915. The French fled in all directions, but did not survive the FIRST POISON GAS ATTACK. The chlorine gas attack was initially a success for the Germans. A breach was made up to 8 km wide and penetrated the front line 4 km deep.

The German army, however, was short of manpower and equipment and did not take advantage of this successful territorial gain. Many die immediately from the poisonous gas, others died days later after a long agony.
