Beautiful cathedral from the time when Ypres still had a bishop. Ypres used to be part of the diocese of Saint-Omer. It had its own cathedral. In 1561, the diocese of Thérouanne was dissolved into three dioceses: Boulogne-sur-Mer, Saint-Omer and Ypres. The church of the St. Martin's Monastery (regular canons of Saint-Augustine) was then elevated to cathedral. Cornelius Jansenius was the most famous bishop of the diocese of Ypres. The cathedral is now known as the St. Martin's Church.

The Roman Catholic Church of St. Martin, commonly known as St. Martin's Cathedral, is a church in the Belgian city of Ypres. This church was the cathedral of the former Ypres diocese, which existed from 1561 to 1801.

The Ypres Cat Parade takes place every year on the 2nd Sunday of May. Until 1817, live cats were thrown down from the belfry. In 1938, cat throwing was reintroduced with plush cats.

The origin of this tradition is said to have originated in 962 when Count Baldwin III gave the order to throw 3 live cats from the towers of the house "De Korte Meers" every year. This was supposedly necessary to renounce evil. This idea appears not to be so unique because this tradition also exists in the French Amiens.
