The monument, inaugurated in 1903, was advertised as a competition by the city of Frankfurt in 1898 with the following task:
"The part that poetry and singing, the pioneers of political freedom, the men of science, the universities and the founders of the economic unification of Germany (Zollverein and others) had in the preparation period from 1815 to 1864 in the unification of the German people should, as far as possible, be given artistic expression by means of sculptures or reliefs, and otherwise by means of inscriptions. The defense of the German Nordmark (Schleswig-Holstein) should also be commemorated as much as possible”.

The memorial was inaugurated on October 18, 1903, the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Leipzig.

Hessemer designed the obelisk made of white Kelheim limestone, while Kaufmann made the relief (as did the bronze figures, which, however, were confiscated in 1940 as a metal donation during World War II and therefore no longer exist). The obelisk is crowned by Clio, the muse of history. She carries a sign that reads in gold: "BE UNITED!"
Three reliefs adorn the base of the column: "THE YOUTH FAREWELL TO THE FATHER", "FORGING THE WEAPONS" and "READY TO FIGHT" .
