    Friedrich-Stoltze, born November 21, 1816 in Frankfurt am Main; † March 28, 1891

There were two other wells on this spot before. First the Friedhofsborn, i.e. the cemetery fountain that was a draw well. The water had to be pumped out of the well in buckets.
On February 4, 1696, a maid put her newborn baby in a sack with a heavy stone and threw it into the well. The deed did not go unnoticed and she was executed on April 12, 1696.

After that, the name was changed to Freedom Fountain. In 1759 the old draw well was converted into a pump well with two pump columns. The column that remains today contains a depiction of the old draw well on the back and is not far from here on the Weckmarkt.
He had to move there when the Frankfurt dialect poet and writer Friedrich Stolze died and the people of Frankfurt erected a memorial in the form of a fountain here in 1895, four years after his death.

In 1974 the technical town hall was built here and the fountain had to go. From 1981 to 2016 it stood on Friedrich-Stolze-Platz near the main guard station.

After the town hall was demolished (2012) and the old town was reconstructed, it returned to its original location.

In 2017, the fountain got its original place back in the course of the reconstruction of the old town quarter between Römerberg and Domplatz. In the meantime it was set up at the Katharinenkirche.
