Today, on a foggy, cloudy November day, we finally continued our hike along the Green Belt, along the former GDR border.
The first 3 km were rather boring along the B105, but at least with some distance from the road on the bike path. On the way there were several information boards on the regional history… read more

Let's see what's going on at the Veddel. Luckily, the fish restaurant was spared from demolition thanks to a signature campaign, and there are plans to build around it. Fortunately, the baked fish fillet pieces with potato salad and the atmosphere are unique.

That was probably really the last beautiful autumn day with a bit of sun. Trees, leaves, flowers shone in the most beautiful autumn colors along the Alster hiking trail. And then when we didn't take a no-through sign so seriously and after a few nice kilometers we suddenly found ourselves in front of… read more

Today, on the 2nd part of the Green Belt along the former GDR/FRG border, you walk away from the Baltic Sea in a southerly direction.
The 'Iron Curtain' was a 5 km wide exclusion zone, a 500 m wide 'protection strip' and a 10 m wide raked control strip ('death strip'). Border signal fences, barbed wire… read more

The 2nd Green Ring runs 100 km around Hamburg and really surprises with quite a bit of greenery. You drive through districts where you would otherwise never get along. We used to hike the route, but it's better by bike. There are too many boring sections on foot, but it's really good as a bike path.

This is the first part of our Green Belt project, i.e. along the former GDR/FRG border from north to south. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, an all-German nature conservation project emerged on the former border strip - almost 1,400 km from the Baltic Sea coast to the Czech Republic - the Green Belt… read more
