Occupied in 1989, the remains of the former Flora Theater on Schulterblatt in the Schanzenviertel have a strong symbolic significance in the autonomous scene as the "Red Flora." The center has repeatedly been the starting point for regional and national social, cultural, and politically motivated activities of the radical left.

The Flora was built as a theater in 1888, expanded in 1890 to include a concert hall, and as early as 1920, films were shown here to supplement the variety program. From 1953 onward, the Flora, as the "Flora Filmpalast," was solely a cinema – with 1,003 seats.

In 1964, the department store chain "1000 Töpfe" moved into the building as a tenant. In 1988, a large part of the historic theater was demolished. A musical theater was planned to be built here, and the opening was planned for 1989 with the German premiere of "The Phantom of the Opera" – despite protests from local residents, fearing rising rents.

The building's temporary interim use as the "Rote Flora" community center became the permanent occupation of the remaining building.

The Rote Flora is a popular political disruption factor in the district and beyond. It is a project that stands for (post) autonomous forms of politics and is used across streams. Many people refer to the building culturally or politically. It has managed to preserve the busy status and also the noncommercial character for decades. The Red Flora is organized autonomously and here you make decisions based on consensus. The house is independently operated and maintained. State funds and sponsorship of any kind are rejected. Nobody should make money in the Red Flora. Any surpluses flow into the preservation of the building as well as into political campaigns. The Red Flora is not a living space, but a center for emancipatory politics and culture. The political project Rote Flora is defended uncompromisingly. The fight for political ideals is more important here than the building.

The Rote Flora is an autonomous center that is not a living space, but a center for emancipatory politics and culture, in the former Flora Theater on the Rückenblatt, which has been occupied since 1989.
