Landestheater Detmold

Planned in 1820, the foundation stone for a court theater was laid in 1825. After 7 months of construction, the curtain of the Royal Lippe Court Theater rose for the first time.

The Detmold State Theater is the only state theater in North Rhine-Westphalia to have an orchestra, ballet and opera ensemble. With opera, operetta, musical and youth music theater, the music theater section is a particular focus. Dance theater, concerts, drama and children's and youth theater also offer a diverse repertoire from classics to premieres.The Detmold State Theater looks back on a long tradition: inaugurated in 1825 as the High Princely Lippe Court Theater, great personalities such as Christian Dietrich Grabbe, Albert Lortzing and Johannes Brahms worked here during the 19th century. After a theater fire in 1912, a new building was built, which was opened to the public in 1919 - then already as the state theater. The historic auditorium with 648 seats is one of the most beautiful theater halls in North Rhine-Westphalia thanks to its stucco work and painting. Several extensions followed in the 20th century. The studio stage is located in the Grabbe House, which was built in 1749 as a Lippe prison on the site of a medieval hospice and was managed by the father of the poet Christian Dietrich Grabbe. Other venues include the Junges Theater, the Detmold Summer Theater and the open-air stage in the courtyard of the State Theater.
