Residents of Den Bosch know Fort Willem Maria from the history of Den Bosch as the Citadel. The Citadel contributes to the rich history of Den Bosch.

In 1637 a fort was built to protect 's Hertogenbosch. The fort was named Fort Willem Maria, after the son and daughter-in-law of Prince Frederik Hendrik of Orange. He had previously recaptured Den Bosch from the Spaniards. After completion, the fort had a dual purpose: to protect the city and at the same time keep an eye on its inhabitants. Since the invasion of the French, the fortress has been better known as 'the Citadel'. Today the Brabant History Information Center is housed in the building.
