    The Temple of Mercury itself, built by Nicolas de Pigage between 1787 and 1792, was constructed as a ruin. As a mortuary temple, it was modeled after a Roman domed tomb and is thus a symbol of mortality. On its south side, a rocky area extends, leading to a grotto. These rocks, fragments of which appear to have tumbled into the pond, also allude to its character as a funerary monument. The grotto simultaneously forms the base of the Temple of Mercury.

    Reliefs are mounted above the temple entrances:

    Hermes/Mercury has lulled the guardian Argos to sleep in order to steal Io, who is disguised as a cow.

    Below this: a bull's skull adorned with ribbons, a symbol of the cult of the dead (above one of the windows).
