Historical Background
Behind the founding on May 12, 1835, were citizens with sympathy for the modern, liberal thinking of the time.
But the association quickly became the preferred meeting place for Flensburg's Danish-loyal bourgeoisie. In the 1850s, a large part of the city's wealthy citizens and many Danish officials joined the association, and it reached a membership of over 400. King Christian VIII was a guest several times, and King Frederik VII and Countess Danner repeatedly participated in the association's events.
