Until the late Middle Ages, Flensburg managed without a town hall. Only about 2,000 people lived in Flensburg in the Middle Ages, and the citizens gathered for deliberations on the Flensburg Thingplatz, where the large parishes of St. Nikolai and St. Marien met, thus roughly marking the center of the city. The parish of St. Johannis, located below St. Nikolai, and the parish of the Gertrudenviertel, located north of St. Marien, were smaller. This square had been chosen carefully.Neither side could claim that its residential area had been taken advantage of.Thingplatz was thus placed in the middle of the route between Südermarkt and Nordermarkt. Even then, the two markets were connected by a road that followed the course of today's Holm and Große Straße.The central location of the Thingplatz is commemorated by the city center of Flensburg, which was embedded in the ground of Große Straße in 1989. The idea for the centerpiece came from Marianne Schreckenberger. The artwork in question was created by Dietmar Gördes and is made of Vanga granite and bronze. Since the centerpiece no longer corresponds to the geographical center
or the political center, it is often also called the historical center. The political center is currently located at the site of today's town hall. The geographical center is constantly changing. In 2014, for example, it was located near the Käte-Lassen School in Flensburg, where the Flensburg radio station was located not far from the school until 1989.de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thingplatz_(Flensburg)

The work of art created by the artist Dietmar Gördes was embedded here in 1989 and reminds of the "historical center of Flensburg", which reminds of the central location of the former Thingplatz.
