Until the late Middle Ages, Flensburg managed without a town hall. Only about 2,000 people lived in Flensburg in the Middle Ages, and the citizens gathered for deliberations on the Flensburg Thingplatz, where the large parishes of St. Nikolai and St. Marien met, thus roughly marking the center of the city.

The parish of St. Johannis, located below St. Nikolai, and the parish of the Gertrudenviertel, located north of St. Marien, were smaller.

This square had been chosen carefully.

Neither side could claim that its residential area had been taken advantage of.
