Here was the nucleus of the village of Essfeld, which was first mentioned in 820. There was also a castle here. The age of the chapel is unknown, but it contains a Romanesque window from the 11th-12th centuries.
A memorial stone for Reinmar von Zweter, a minstrel, stands next to the entrance to the Nikolaus chapel. He was a student of Walther von der Vogelweide and died in Essfeld around 1260.
