Small Franconian town right on the Main. Craftsmanship and the Middle Ages shape the cityscape. Cozy localities invite you to take a break here. From Würzburg the place is accessible via good cycle paths for all companions.

Sommerhausen has been an important community on the Main since the Middle Ages. It was not under the jurisdiction of the Prince-Bishop of Würzburg. The Schenken von Limpurg came to Sommerhausen in 1413 through the marriage of Schenken Friedrich with Elisabetha von Hohenlohe. As part of the Speckfeld dominion of the heirs of the Counts Schenk von Limpurg (first Counts Pückler, then Counts Rechteren-Limpurg), which was mediated by Bavaria, Sommerhausen belonged to the Franconian Imperial Circle from 1500. From 1540 onwards, the Reformation was introduced in the Limpurg regions, so that Sommerhausen became a Protestant enclave in the predominantly Catholic Main Franconia.

In 1810, during territorial consolidation, it came to the Grand Duchy of Würzburg, with which it reverted to Bavaria in 1814. In the course of administrative reforms in Bavaria, the current community was created with the municipal edict of 1818. In 1896/1897 the community had a bridge built over the Main.

Nestled in the valley of the Main under vineyards, the town has been the flagship of Franconian romanticism for decades. The medieval city wall has been preserved. All of the buildings in the town center in the narrow, winding streets look back on several hundred years of history. The town hall dates back to the 16th century.
