Architect Hendrik Berlage (21 February 1856 – 12 August 1934) designed this building for the insurance company De Nederlanden van 1845. In 1895 it was Berlage's first building in The Hague. The Grote Kerk ('Great Church'), the church of St. James, is the city church of The Hague. The Grote Kerk hosted most of the royal family's wedding and baptism celebrations. Since the completion of a major renovation in 1987, the church now serves as a venue for exhibitions, fairs and celebrations.
