About Aad Milla

Nice walk, but not to drive for. Wedged in by the water of the Delftsche Schie and the asphalt of the A13, you can't really extend the walk. The A13 is audible during almost the entire walk. The two sculpture gardens and the farm path through the meadows make it pleasant. The latter without dogs and only outside breeding season 15 March – 15 June.

This tour is highly recommended. After the start (A12 carpool parking Nieuwerbrug) you first have to walk along the A12 for a while, but as soon as you have passed under the A12 to the sheep dike you will be rewarded. A long dike with sheep, with a nice path along the water in Driebruggen on the way. Then one of the most beautiful Tiendwegen we know. (Which can get quite soggy in winter?) Finally, a stretch through the meadows. The majority of the tour consists of real hiking trails, so no traffic in sight, not even cyclists. The views make you forget that you are in the middle of the Randstad.

Nicolaas Molenaar (1850-1930) was trained as an architect by the famous Pierre Cuypers. From 1885 he had his own architectural practice in The Hague. Molenaar built the Canisius College in Nijmegen and many neo-Gothic churches, most of which have been demolished. There are still two Molenaar churches in The Hague. But for this walk we had as goal all houses in The Hague that Molenaar (as far as we know) designed. In order of the walk these are:
      1) Banstraat 27 / Sweelinckplein 2-3 (Sri Wedari House, 1893)
      2) Statenplein 4-13 (circa 1905)
      3) Willem de Zwijgerlaan 1-5 (circa 1905)
      4) Statenlaan 1-7 and 11-33A (circa 1905)

This walk is entirely dedicated to the architect Hendrik Berlage (February 21, 1856 – August 12, 1934) and his work in The Hague. We walk not only along his buildings, but also along city breakthroughs of his hand, such as the Vondelstraat. It is a very beautiful and varied walk, but today's photos relate exclusively to Berlage. An important characteristic of Berlage's work is the starting point of a Gesamtkunstwerk, the synthesis of the arts. That is why we find, for example, sculptures on the facades and appropriate lighting ornaments. This aspect was expressed even more in the interiors, but unfortunately we cannot enter (except for the museum).

A very varied round. First a view of the shipping direction Rotterdam, then the nice center of Maassluis with various drawbridges and catering, then on to the picturesque Maasland. And as a bouncer, you suddenly find yourself in a very wide polder landscape. A very nice polder path takes you past the cattle and the ditches, with enormous views. The only drawback of the latter part is some traffic noise from the A20, but that is relatively easy.

Recommended. Dune landscape, a section of the North Sea beach and paths through the forest. The starting point (the parking lot) is somewhat hidden, hence the coordinates: 52.279777 and 4.481527. The reason for doing rounds of the dunes and beach preferably 'clockwise' is that you then have the sun at your back on the beach and usually the wind too.We were surprised by a sign that you have to pay (1.50 per person), that is the segment through the Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen. Payment can be made on the spot digitally or in advance via the website awd.waternet.nl/visit/accesscards/The part over the beach is a relatively quiet and calm part, because it was low tide, Komoot thinks we swam a bit. Saw a lot of deer in the dunes, which are quite tame but not easy to get a good picture of. Furthermore, the tour has quite a few paths with very loose sand: walking is therefore slightly heavier and slower than usual.

Alternate round. Landgoed De Tempel is (still) unknown territory for Komoot, because the opening is very recent. There is also a small cart with a terrace on the estate for coffee, tea and lunch. Note: BB is therefore outside the breeding season, which applies to the segment through the meadow. Natuurmonumenten has created a new parking lot (coordinates 51.951790 4.413610) where a day ticket costs seven euros (members free).

The Horsten can be quite busy on weekends, and most people walk on the wide paths. But on weekdays on the more hidden narrow paths it is very quiet. In our collection 'Walks north of The Hague' there are now three by de Horsten. This walk was certainly the most beautiful of the three, if only because the beautiful Molenpad is part of it. The 7.5 km round can easily be made longer.

We planned to visit a whole bunch of monuments during Heritage Day, but in many locations the lines were so long that we kept walking. No lines at churches and at the Public Transport Museum. As for the route: you can really plan nicer routes in The Hague than this...

Except for the part along the water, the entire trip is on asphalt. And is actually better suited for cycling than walking. But if you like polder views and a lot of cattle on the way (now that they are not yet in stables), it is certainly not an unpleasant trip. Fresh milk and cheese is available at several farms. The last photo is actually the most typical of what can be seen along the way: emptiness.
