On the site of today's house at Schlossplatz 12 b stood the house in which, after the death of his father in 1779, Johann Paul Friedrich Richter and his mother, Sophia Rosina Richter, lived in poverty from 1784 to 1797. Here, he, who later called himself Jean Paul as a successful writer, "suffered the worst and wrote the best." A memorial plaque commemorates the house, which was demolished in 1875 due to its dilapidated condition.

Here was the house in which Jean Paul temporarily lived during his Hof years. The house was demolished in 1875 due to dilapidation and the current building was erected in its place. There have been memorial plaques on the houses here since 1863.

The most famous student and namesake of the grammar school, the poet Jean Paul, spent several years of his poor youth at Schlossplatz 12 b, where, in his own words, he "suffered the worst and wrote the best".
The writer Johann Paul Friedrich Richter, better known by his stage name Jean Paul, was born on March 21, 1763 in Wunsiedel.
His father was a pastor; Since he changed jobs, Jean Paul moved to Joditz in 1765 and to Schwarzenbach an der Saale in 1776. After the father died in 1779, the mother lived in poor conditions in Hof. From 1784 to 1797 Jean Paul lived part-time with his mother in a house that was on the site of the current house at Schlossplatz 12 b.
The humble two-story property, demolished in 1875, had a small self-catering garden. Jean Paul later judged his Hofer years: "Hof, where I suffered the worst and wrote the best."
