The old town has been the center of Hof's life since 1180. Of course, it has undergone significant changes in the 800 years since then, most recently between 1900 and 1910, when the old two-story houses were demolished and replaced by prestigious townhouses, primarily in the Art Nouveau style. The most striking building at the southern end of the pedestrian zone is the Catholic Church of St. Mary, built in 1864.

The old town has also completely changed its character over time.

The first documented settlement in the old town was around 1180. At that time, however, it had no town charter. In 1230 the Andechs-Meranians had the Neustadt built, which eventually also received town charter. In 1864 the construction of the first Catholic church in Hof, the Marienkirche, began on the site of the former Gasthof Zur Sonne. It stands between the old town and Lorenzstrasse.Source and further information
