Beautiful view of the sculpture by Friedrich Franz

Leopold I of Anhalt-Dessau was a prince in the small state of the same name, a Prussian military leader and military reformer (among other things, he introduced marching in step in the Prussian army). There were many humorous anecdotes about the "Old Dessauer" ("could hear the Dessau March every day"), which after his death caused his despotic nature to be forgotten and gave the impression of a prince who was strict but eccentric and popular with the people.
The monument to the Prince of Anhalt-Dessau now stands on the Schlossplatz in Dessau in front of St. Mary's Church. Erected on the Great Market in 1860, it was stored during the GDR era.
The figure of the "Old Dessauer" is a second cast of the Berlin monument by August Karl Eduard Kiß (also Kiss, 1802-1865), who created the bronze sculpture based on the model of the marble sculpture of the prince first made by Schadow.
Leopold was a Prussian field marshal and bearer of the "Order of the Black Eagle", the highest Prussian order. The Order of the Black Eagle had to be worn every day - and as you can see, the old Dessau man sticks to it...
