The building was designed by Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius on behalf of the city of Dessau. The main elements of the complex are the glazed three-story workshop wing, the equally high wing for the vocational school and the five-story studio building. The workshop wing and the commercial vocational school are connected by a two-story bridge. A one-storey intermediate building forms the transition from the workshop wing to the studio building. Here the auditorium, the stage and the canteen form the so-called festival level. The studio house accommodated students and young masters in 28 residential studios, each 20 m2 in size.

After Bauhaus was expelled from Weimar, Dessau was awarded the contract for the new location. The Bauhaus building was built here in 1925 outside the city gates on a plot of land provided for this purpose. With the 100,000 Reichsmarks, the interior design was also realized according to the ideas of the Bauhaus at that time.
Many areas are now open to the public. Already in the days of the GDR, the building, which had been badly damaged by the war, was restored by 1986.
Many details have been preserved and a break in the café on the ground floor is highly recommended.
