The church was consecrated in 1331 as part of a Dominican monastery. Formerly a place of pilgrimage with relics of Thomas Aquinas, scene of the city's first Lutheran service (1529).
The Paulinerkirche became the nucleus of the new university in 1737 and has since been used for university purposes, especially as a university library.Today the former church houses one of the most beautiful event and exhibition rooms in Lower Saxony.
