A neoclassical assembly hall on Wilhelmsplatz, built between 1835 and 1837, it was donated by William IV to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Queen Georgia Augusta.
With its large ballroom, it remains a central building of the university today. The impressive gabled roof, designed by Ernst von Bandel, represents the four faculties of theology, law, medicine, and philosophy. The building houses the Karzer (detention cell), the historic university prison, with the monument to William IV in front of it.The assembly hall and the detention cell can be visited as part of guided tours offered by the Tourist Information Office.
